In 2005 I left an entry-level job at @NationInstitute—an org "dedicated to strengthening the independent press and advancing social justice and civil rights”—for a finance gig that almost doubled my salary. That night, I cried to my roommates for “selling my soul.”(thread)
Now, 15 years into a career as a financial writer, as I obsessively consume news about our deteriorating democracy, the rising power of misogynists and white supremacists, and the war on truth, I’m more haunted than ever by the ghost of my journalism degree.
But it wasn’t until listening to the lastest episode of @gaslitnation that I saw the dangerous consequences of our country’s narrative being shaped mainly by those financially privileged enough at the start of their careers to live comfortably on peanuts in media hubs like NYC.
As @sarahkendzior once wrote: “white people debate whether race matters, rich people debate whether poverty matters, and men debate whether gender matters. People for whom these problems have no alternative but to matter...are locked out of the discussion.”
It never before occurred to me that, as a feminist working mother and writer with lots to say about the state of the union, my feeling locked out of the discussion is, at least in part, perhaps symptomatic of a bigger issue.
Thank you, @AndreaChalupa and @sarahkendzior, as always, for shedding light on so many problems that are hiding in plain sight.
Ps. If you haven't noticed from my mentions, retweets and likes, I'm a little obsessed with you, @sarahkendzior 🙄 Hope you don't mind if I live vicariously through you at least until we (hopefully) get through this crazy Trump era 😜(not in a creepy way, I promise!).
Pps. Everyone stop what you're doing right now and subscribe to @gaslitnation !! ❤️🙏🇺🇸
