Several things about this are extraordinary. Not least the timing.
By “timing” I mean that there was apparently an active pen register within HOURS of publication of an article containing leaked material. And unless they zeroed in on a suspect almost immediately, it would seem like the pen register must have targeted the reporter.
But a pen register is an extraordinarily intrusive tool to apply to a reporter, as it would provide a real-time map of their communications with sources.
Ok, looking at more of the document, that was probably a hasty conclusion. I assumed that the pen register going active the same day an article ran meant the former was an immediate response to the latter. But there’s reason to think they’d zeroed in on Edwards already.
