Had the same thought: a face-saving way to surrender in a game of shutdown chicken that’s not going as he hoped. Concede the funding fight on the pretense he can just do it by executive fiat, then either fume in mock shock & horror when it turns out he can’t, OR...
...scrounge some pittance from unallocated funds, and pretend that the wall got built, as he already does half the time anyway.
Which shouldn’t be read as understating what a gross, impeachable abuse the attempt would be.

There’s a very weird argument here. McCarthy claims a special counsel was unnecessary b/c there was no reason to think career DOJ officials wouldn’t be capable of supervising the investigation adequately. He brings up the obvious counter: Trump keeps brazenly trying to interfere!
The response to THIS is to recite the claim that a president’s exercise of his powers can never constitute the crime of obstruction. But even if we pretend that’s true, it’s not really responsive.
A president nakedly trying to pressure his subordinates to squelch or whitewash investigation that might implicate himself or his allies OBVIOUSLY calls into question the ability of career staff to carry it out, whether or not the president’s corrupt influence is criminal.

Having polished off the last of Ruiz Zafon’s “Cemetery of Forgotten Books” tetralogy, I decided to reread the first, “Shadow of the Wind,” in Spanish. Lucia Graves is a brilliant translator, but my god is the original prose miles better. And I loved it in English.
Among other things, the first line of the first book is a naked Marquez riff that I somehow missed reading it in English.
Actually the middle two books would probably benefit most. The first sold itself on plot when I thought the prose was workmanlike. The 2nd & 3rd didn’t really, and would be different animals if they’re this well written.

It was a very good year for game aficionados: 2018 saw the release of God of War, Red Dead 2, and Spider-Man. Yet I’m mildly shocked to say that my GOTY may actually be… Celeste.
(I reserve the right to amend this determination once I’ve actually finished RDR2 and had a little time to reflect on them all at a distance.)
In part that may be because it’s the rare brutally-difficult game that is actually feasible for an employed person over 30 to finish. I love the Soulsbournes, but I’ve yet to finish one, because I invariably end up having to leave them alone for a couple weeks halfway through...

1. The 2014 sanctions were not meant to 'isolate' Russia, but to squeeze it in order to send a message. Had the intention been to isolate Russia and bring down its economy, one could have used harsher measures that were available.
2. Do not confuse the 2014 sanctions with the Trump-era US sanctions the aim of which is unclear and the effects of which are chaotic.

There was an executive push to head Congress off on sanctions and use the threat to negotiate a way out of the US-TR downward spiral. <thread>
This started with Sect. Tillerson and the agreement to the two working groups:

Working Group 1: Manbij
Working Group 2: Everything else

Early results was the roadmap in Manbij

WG2 = S400 and legal issues
On F-35, much attention to Mattis letter. I believe the letter was in response to the original Shaheen-Lankford bill, which looked like the Van Hollen - Graham amendment in FY 2019 appropriations bill.
