I've been challenged by @digitalbond to come up with a complementary list of statements security researchers should never say about voting machines/elections. So here it is:
1) You election officials don't know anything; we know technology, you don't.
2) Blockchain is the answer
3) I just started looking into this voting issue in 2016 and can't understand why people don't see the easy solution I see
4) Each ballot should be matched to the voter so voters can verify afterward that their ballot got counted, and
5) Voters should be allowed to take their ballot home so they can verify afterward that it got counted

 I'll leave #6 blank for those who smarter than me to fill in

Good interview with @securelyfitz about the Bloomberg chip hack story by @riskybusiness. Joe, a hardware hacking expert, was one of the named sources quoted in the piece. He discusses his discomfort with the story and skepticism about its accuracy. risky.biz/RB517_feature/
I spoke with Joe on Friday and he also told me no fact checkers from Bloomberg had contacted him to verify information he provided or even to verify his quote before the piece published. Apple also told me no fact checkers contacted them, as did Joe Grand, the other quoted source
As a point of comparison - for the New York Times magazine cover story I recently wrote about election security, I spent a week w/ two fact-checkers combing through every fact in the piece; they also called all quoted sources to verify their words and any facts they gave me.

For months, ES&S refused to tell me or @RonWyden how many of its customers had remote-access software pcAnywhere installed on their election-management systems. ES&S would only say "a small number” Today, NPR reports ES&S has finally revealed 300 jurisdictions had it installed.
ES&S told NPR that the software was never installed on machines that tabulate votes. But that's exactly what election-manage systems do -- they tabulate the aggregated votes collected from voting machines.
