10 years ago, at Curve. Was looking for a cab. Driver quoted a ridiculous price. Refused to use the metre.
I remarked, “Takpelah saya cari teksi lain. Bukan korang kena pakai meter ke?”

Back then, taxis reigned.

There were no other options back then. Buses were infrequent. No MRT. No Grab.
Connectivity was poor in the city. Taking a cab was like taking Russian Roulette. If you’re lucky, you get an honest driver. Often enough, we weren’t so lucky.

For so long, taxi drivers held us at ransom. We had no convenient alternatives. We were ripped off, many times.
Now that there’s Grab, free buses, MRT etc - we really don’t need them as much as we used to. And connectivity has improved tremendously for most of us.

KL taxis are notorious, as among the worst in the world. You would’ve thought, with the rise of e-hailing, taxis would improve their services & buck up to survive.
But still, pi mai pi mai tang tu jugak. Like dinosaurs, they’ll be extinct soon. But they did have their chance.
