#NewYearsDay is when I used to resolve to lose weight by eating healthier & going to the gym.

But I'd get overwhelmed with guilt when I skipped a workout or ate dessert & eventually get discouraged.

A few years ago, I started a new ritual & its made a HUGE difference.
(THREAD)
(2) I use #NewYearsDay as a time to take inventory of my body.

I know- that sounds like it could get awfully problematic. But this is NOT a time to catalog every fault. This is about gratitude.

And changing that one tiny thing about your mindset can change how you see yourself
(3) Here's an example. I might start with my feet, which are looking pretty rough right now. I'd notice the mangled toenail that fell off after I injured it trail running this fall.

And while I was scrubbing off dead skin, trimming nails & moisturizing my feet, I'd say thanks.
(4) These are the workhorses that carry me through my day and around the world.

They deserve my attention and care. I might add a new pair of comfortable work shoes to my shopping list or make an appointment to ask my doctor to check that mangled toenail.
(5) And I'd move up my body, performing self-care with an attitude of gratitude. Because here's the key- they are millions of people who would love to be healthy right now. YOU ARE LUCKY.

You and I get to walk this earth and breath this air and rejoice every day
(6) When I take inventory of my body on New Years, I'm not looking to make promises for a #NewYearNewMe . I'm looking for ways to express gratitude and take care of the body I'm lucky enough to have.

And when I approach it in this way, a miraculous thing happens
(7) Instead of feeling weighed down by my own judgment, I start to feel blessedly free. And encouraged to care for the body I have rather than punish it.
To say thanks with healthy food rather than strict diets. To feel the skin I'm in rather than feel uncomfortable in it.
(8) I struggled with an eating disorder for more than twenty years. And for a long time, it stole my joy. In everything.

It kept me mired in secrets and shame

Our bodies, no matter the shape or size, are extraordinary things.
Both fragile & strong. A force to be reckoned with
(9) This #NewYearsDay , make an appointment to see your dermatologist about that weird mole. Schedule a mammogram.

Buy a better bra that actually fits. Not the size you want to be, but the one you are.

Say it out loud. With gratitude.
YOU ARE LUCKY.

Happy New Year, friends
