In the aftermath, then, ECB said this: ‘Analysis of this by the ECB Integrity Team has cast no doubt on the integrity or behaviour of any England player, current or former’
A quick reminder: they forgot to mention that one England player had been interrogated by ICC for two hours in relation after a failure to produce phone and bank records. Forgetful? Careless?
Not quite as careless as employing Mushtaq Ahmed, though, for six years as a bowling coach. Anyone remember dear old Mushie? Good spinner. Dubious character
This was how the Qayyum Report (2000), the investigation into fixing by Pakistan, remembers him: ‘There are sufficient grounds to cast strong doubt on Mushtaq. He has brought the name of the Pakistan team into disrepute with, inter alia, associating with gamblers.’ Gets worse…
‘This commission therefore recommends that Mushtaq Ahmed be censured, kept under close watch and be not given any office of responsibility (selection or captaincy) in the team or on the board.’
The report heard from a bookies that he had paid Mushtaq and Salim Malik $100k to fix v Australia in Sept 1994. Mushtaq, in his testimony, confirmed he knew the bookie. But had taken no money from Pervez and said his performance the match was good. Whoops. Mistake...
‘When questioned as to how he knew which match the counsel was referring to, Mushtaq Ahmed had no answer.’
Mushtaq Ahmed was appointed England bowling coach in 2008. He left in 2014. Now, remind me when those England games which have been exposed were played? In 2010 the ICC said they would not employ him because of his links to match-fixing
2nd tweet should read 'in relation to corruption'
