Four positive aspects of the #Synod18 "Final Document" (still available only in Italian) on the church's ministry with #LGBT people: 1) It stressed the value of "accompaniment." 2) It acknowledged the work that many in the church are doing to minister to LGBT people... 1/
3) It acknowledged that the church doesn't know everything about LGBT people and (as with other groups) must listen to them. 4) It spoke clearly of the need to reach out, include and look for ways for LGBT people to be part of the life and mission of the church. 2/
I see these four aspects as positive developments and, along with the overarching theme of listening in a "synodal" (i.e., more collegial and consultative) church, good indications of progress in the church's ministry to LGBT Catholics and outreach to LGBT people in general. 3/3

Dear friends: This week was one of the worst weeks in the church and in the Society of Jesus. By January, all of the US Jesuit Provinces will have released the names of Jesuits credibly accused of sexual abuse. This was the right and moral thing to do. 1/
It is part of the process of confession, which we hope will lead to healing and reconciliation. And to be clear: any credibly accused Jesuit today is immediately removed from active ministry. And any Jesuit who may have committed a crime is reported to civil authorities. 2/
But the release of names means that the stories of abuse will be read and cause further outrage and despair. 3/

Writing an introduction to a new book about my friend Cardinal Avery Dulles, whose 100th anniversary we celebrate this year, I came upon this interview with him, done after he was named a cardinal. What an amazing person. (Note his comments on division.)

Dear friends: I don't often recommend films but last night I saw the extraordinary "Happy as Lazzaro," on @netflix. A combination of an Italian neo-realist film and a parable, it hints at the stories of Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi and of course Lazarus.
It is an exquisitely made film, at once moving and challenging, clear and confusing, consoling and shocking. The religious themes, Catholic and otherwise, are throughout what I would say is close to a masterpiece.
It's one of the most profoundly religious films you will ever see.

What can I do to get you to read and share these important investigative pieces?
This is a serious question, because the investigative work I am doing is crucial, the interviews I am doing are with people whose voices are often suppressed & the issues are ones that get little attention.

I realize this is a problem for many journalists, not just me, so....?
Last month I did a big piece on #lungcancer among women and another on #familicide. One got massive attention, the other, very little.

I am interested in feedback.
I know few people read articles, but we write them for you.
So--not abusively, please--let me know your thoughts.

1/ THREAD: A brief #LGBTHistory for this #Pride. Really FEEL THIS. Prior to the 1970s, being LGBT was ILLEGAL & homosexuality was considered a mental illness. Police would conduct a raid, arrest you, cuff you, humiliate you, then publish your name, address & photo in the paper.
2/ After your name, address & mugshot appeared in your local paper, you’d then be fired from your job. There were no legal protections--which is still true in 28 of 50 states today, but back then it was a near certainty.
3/ And then at Compton’s, at Stonewall, our LGBT forebears fought back. They said “No more" to these police raids on their communities. Along with Vietnam objectors, civil rights activists and feminists, they protested. They were targets. It was dangerous.

This thread should be read with open eyes by those who love and trust my @senatorsanders of Vermont. I voted for him four times. I watched him up close and personal (spit on my face level) for 19 years as a constituent. He’s not what we hoped. He never changed. He never evolved.
I should add that in a small state as a campaigner junkie his spittle is close enough to you, will wake you up. Camera on he’s a dream. Camera off he’s an arrogant, petty, mean old man who is still tranturming because everyone doesn’t worship his outdated, narrow, limited views.
People ask why #gaytwitter won’t let it go they @SenSanders lied about being a big gay hero over her. He never hardly helped us. We sat on pins hoping he would speak up and tell Vermonters who worship him it’s time for civil unions, it’s time for marriage and this is why.

This day. So disappointing. I had just moved to Vermont. Was so excited to have a “progressive “ senator. Well it was a bernie bust for me that day. Couldn’t even let us have one fucking gay day.
