Lots of tweets on voting running up to the midterms, so here is mine. In Washington State, where I live, we vote by mail. sos.wa.gov/elections/faq_…. 1/7
You sit down at your desk or kitchen table, review the pamphlet or go online (or wherever) for supplemental information, and color in the ovals to reflect your choices. 2/7
You can do this all at once, or whenever you have the time. No waiting in line, no complex voting machines, no trying to remember your preferences on down-ballot items. And no worries about government moving or closing polling places. 3/7
You sign the ballot, put it in the provided secrecy sleeve, and then put the sleeve inside the postage-prepaid return envelope. It has to be postmarked by Election Day or placed into one of many physical dropboxes by 8 PM on Election Day. 4/7
As far as I know, there have been no serious allegations of voter fraud specially associated with the mail-in system, and of course paper ballots are now thought to be safer in many ways than some alternatives. 5/7
It’s convenient. It enables thoughtful voting. It doesn’t guarantee turnout but I bet it helps. Not a panacea, and others' mileage may vary, but at least an interesting experiment in one of what Justice Brandeis called the 50 laboratories of democracy. 6/7
But, of course, it can’t by itself solve the larger problem that some people will oppose it precisely for those reasons…7/7
