Witnesses say Meek jumped in front of his sister and others to shield them.

Sean Adler, 48, a married father of two, was working at Borderline to make extra money, his sister says:

"From what I understand, Sean tried to disarm" the shooter. "That is typical of Sean. He was a protector, always sticking up for people." nbcnews.to/2QBvtrC

Sgt. Ron Helus was a 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff's Dept.

He called his wife just before he went into the bar to confront the shooter:

Alaina Housley, 18, was a student at Pepperdine University, and the niece of the actress Tamera Mowry-Housley.

Daniel Manrique was a former Marine and "a veteran who wanted to help fellow recovering veterans in re-entering society and gave his all to supporting veteran mental health," his brother says.

Blake Dingman, 21, played high school baseball in Thousand Oaks.

"We were really proud of him," a great-aunt says. "He was a really fun, energetic and loving nephew."

Noel Sparks, 21, was a student at nearby Moorpark College.

She was a regular at Borderline, where she spent Halloween and celebrated her 21st birthday, the AP reports.

Kristina Morisette, 20, worked as a cashier at Borderline, according to local media reports.

Before heading out to her 6 p.m. shift Wednesday night, she left her mother with a souvenir from a recent trip to Austin, LA Times reports. nbcnews.to/2QBvtrC

Jake Dunham, 21, was also killed at Borderline.
