I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Context: a conf asks accepted speakers to get their company to pay for a ticket, on the grounds that the company is benefiting from having their employee on stage.

But how do companies measure that benefit? Which part of the org gets it?
I don’t agree with asking speakers to pay (for all the reasons @EricaJoy and @lizthegrey enumerate) but I do think, intuitively, that the company benefits. It helps build their brand among the attendees, etc.

But that’s all a bit hand-wavey. How might we measure it?
It’s really easy to quantify the ROI of sponsoring a conference & having a booth. How many people came by? How many left contact info & seemed interested in working with us? How many are solid leads we should follow up with ASAP? etc.
Sponsoring a conf can come out of the recruiting budget, and you can tell right away (within a few months at least) whether it was (short-term) worthwhile, by using the recruiting department metrics. It’s not so straightforward for having a speaker on stage.
