I might one day turn this into a paper. But for now, let's look at this really cool part of our history! I am so excited!!

What I will call "devices" are abstract signs, seals... that got progressively more complex by end of #Sasanian era. They are also called #Tamga (or tamgha)
Tamga from Turkish. In Middle Persian and modern Persian, the word would be Nishaan or Neshaan ( Ossetian gakk)

These have an amazing and long history. They might have started as signs for cattle, later for clans & families. Were used by people across Eurasia

When asked if the 1.5 million figure is accurate for the number of Armenians killed, Hovannisian said that numbers were not important. He said, "a whole nation died." He asserted that Armenians were moved and lost their way of life in their homeland forever.
Moderator Ungar then turned to Justin McCarthy, Associate Professor of Middle Eastern History at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and asked if he agreed. McCarthy expressed his concern about the way Armenians present the facts.

The Surp Pırgiç Church in Karaköy, #Istanbul is home to a unique ceremony that takes place once a year. The church was the first #Armenian Catholic church to be consecrated in the Ottoman Empire after the Armenian Catholic millet was recognised by Sultan Mahmud II in 1830.#Thread Image
When the church was first opened in 1834, Istanbul was suffering from a major plague outbreak. A painting of the Virgin Mary & Baby Jesus that was sent to the church as an inaugural gift from the #Vatican was paraded around the streets of Istanbul to ward off the plague. Image
Eventually, as the plague outbreak in the city died down, many attributed this to the miraculous powers of this painting in #SurpPırgiç. Sultan Mahmud II took note of this and gifted a diamond brooch to the church and its congregation. Image

I've been reading about the 1905 clashes between Armenians & Azerbaijanis, the first known inter-ethnic confrontation between the two, and reaffirmed my conviction that the disagreements & subsequent #Armenia-#Azerbaijan wars are the product of the 'divide et impera' policy 1/10
One of the reasons that triggered the bloody events was the underrepresentation of the Muslim population in local city councils. Although the Muslim population of #Baku accounted for around 80% of the electorate, they were entitled to less than a third of the seats. 2/10
Without a significant #Russia'n population in the region, Russians chose to rely on #Armenia'ns as Christians, promoting them to administrative roles. After a while though, seeing the rise of national sentiments among them, they did the contrary, this time betting on Muslims 3/10

On 23Dec.1947,Stalin signed a resolution by the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the resettlement of Azerbaijani kolkhoz members and other Azerbaijanis from the Armenian SSR to the lowlands of the Kur & Araz rivers. On 10Mar.1948,a further resolution on resettlement was signed.
Textual study of the #resolutions by the Council of Ministers of the #USSR shows that they had complete disregard for #human and civil #rights. #Azerbaijanis were removed, not from certain territories, as stated, but from the whole of #Armenia.
It becomes clear that the aim was to oust all #Azerbaijanis from #Armenia. According to the last, 11th, Article of the #resolution dated 23 December 1947, it was intended to settle foreign #Armenians in Armenia in place of the deported #Azerbaijanis.

#Istanbul is a city of endless gentrification. The most recent episode in an endless series of urban transformation projects in the city is the demolition of the old brothels on Zürafa Street in Galata. #Thread Image
42 structures are being demolished in and around Zürafa Street. Most of these buildings, which had been used as brothels for decades, had little historical or architectural value. Image
The demolitions are supposed to clear the area from modern structures in order to highlight Byzantine & Ottoman heritage. This is part of an ongoing project to create a so-called “cultural space” in Beyoğlu. Image

🧵Once again: #Hays AKA #Armenians could never occupy #Karabakh alone, withiout #Haykakan AKA #Armenian terrorists from USA, Lebanon and first of all without the #Russia|n elite forces from Kostroma, Pskov and the 366 army unit..
Here's the evidence: A. Nevzorov @NevzorovAG, brave #Russian journalist, mentions mercanaries from Pskov, #Russia, in his report on the "bravest person I've ever met in my life - #Azerbaijani Vezir Orujov" killed in the fiercest battle in Agdara, 1993
We, Azerbaijanis, follow what's happening in #Ukraine with pain in our hearts and tears in our eyes. 💔😢🇺🇦💙💛
But as an Azerbaijani I'm extremely happy when I see Russian losses, especially when I see the killed #Russians from Pskov and Kostroma.

#Ankara is too often portrayed as a model Turkish city, bereft of the cosmopolitan legacies of cities such as Istanbul and Izmir. I wrote about the little known non-Muslim history of Ankara in my first article for
@AjamMC #Thread…
"Modern-day understandings of Ankara’s history, influenced and shaped by the discourses of Turkish nationalism, seek to paint a picture of Ankara in the Ottoman era as a small, remote, ethnically, linguistically, and religiously homogeneous town."
"In the early decades of the Republic, as the new buildings, boulevards, parks, squares, and thoroughfares of modern Ankara were designed and constructed, the city’s non-Muslim cultural heritage was sidelined, and oftentimes destroyed."

I still giggle at one of the more obscure Syriac names of God, although it represents in a nutshell the multi-lingual heritage of Syriac Christianity.

Some early Greek manuscripts of translations of the Hebrew Bible included graphical representations of the Tetragrammaton.
יהוה (Hebrew)
ΠΙΠΙ (Greek)

The visual connection is obvious, but of course if one were to try to sound out the Greek, it is read the opposite direction, and Π is 'p' and Ι is 'i' leading to a pronunciation "Pipi."

That's all ancient stuff, but it got into Syriac.
I've heard a rumor that Jacob of Edessa in the 7th/8th C wrote a polemic against those who call God "Pipi" (though I don't have the citation - citations welcome!).

Of course, in Syriac, it has no graphical relationship to the Tetragrammaton (ܦܝܦܝ), but that didn't stop it.

There is a committee in America called the "American Armenian National Committee" (#ANCA). As it is an #Armenian committee, all Twitter accounts of this committee share irrelevant, inappropriate tweets and retweets, such as inquiries or appeals. @ANCA_WR @ANCA_DC
His task is to falsely accuse #Azerbaijan and #Turkey, to target all countries and people who support Azerbaijan. They bring Armenians to the forefront in almost every issue related to Azerbaijan, and in this way they want others to feel sorry for the Armenians and support them.
After moving to the South Caucasus two centuries ago, Armenians committed massacres and genocides against Azerbaijanis (for example, the genocide in Baku in 1918, in Guba and many cities of Azerbaijan, in Khojaly in 1992). They have repeatedly committed terrorism in the past year.

Do you know the story of #coffee?

Sure you get it from Starbucks or grind it at home but its story was not as simple as farm to pot

The story involves dancing goats, Fatwa, babtization, kings, revolutions, patriotism, Beethoven

Coffee has a rich & troubling history

☕️ Thread
1/ 1st, the legend:

Legend has it that an #Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi witnessed his goats gamboling after eating coffee shrub’s red fruit. Perplexed, Kaldi tried the fruit himself and realized the same effect on him. A monk witnessed it & took some of the fruit with him.
2/ Now, the history:

The coffee plant and fruit has been used for 1000s of years but it wasn’t until the 13 century when the beans were roasted, which sky rocketed its popularity. Coffee originated in Ethiopia but it was across the Red Sea, in #Yemen, it was first cultivated.

In two weeks from now, the first #UEFA Euros match in #Baku will kick-off when #Wales meets #Switzerland.

The UK FCO currently warns of unexploded material, terrorists attacks to be "likely" and high COVID rates. I'd say all these risks are low, but there are other issues:
According to @ILGAEurope, #Azerbaijan is the most homophobic country in Europe. So better don't go, if you are part of the #LGBTQI community 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
Sadly, #UEFA, as #FIFA, does not care much about safeguarding #LGBTQI fans...
Be aware that #Azerbaijan is one of the most restrictive countries in the world and certainly has the most restrictive regime in Europe. Vision #Belarus, just much worse, as all kind of international organisations report.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God was located in Baku's Walled City (Icheri Shehir). It was built in 1797-1799, although a church has been mentioned here as early as the 13th century in Armenian and Persian sources. It was destroyed in 1992 and a cafe stands in its place.
You can see the #Armenian Church of the Holy Mother of God again here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, standing next to #Baku's infamous #MaidenTower.

Black People and the Holocaust

First they came for Africa, Namibians, and, I said nothing because I was not an African nor a Namibian.

And, then they came for the Jews.

The African Holocaust

“Decades before the Nazis turned to the Jews, German colonialists in Southwest Africa - now #Namibia - slaughtered tens of thousands of tribespeople in a systematic genocide.”

“... [During] the Second Reich, rapid multimillion-person population loss and the tearfully destitute conditions propelling the outflow, were devastating to the German national identity. A concept arose: Volk ohne Raum, that is, “a people without space.”…
