Manager "readmes" or "user guides" are a bad trend. Managers: get the fuck over yourselves with this nonsense.
No, writing self-serving docs about "how to work with me" is not a good way to build trust, especially since I promise you that you have some glaring blind spot that will inevitably show up in your behavior vs doc and undermine your credibility
I'm sure many of you are earnestly trying to do right by your teams with this but really, I would advise against it. You're not a computer program, you're a human being. You contain multitudes.
To be crystal clear: doing written exercises for yourself to articulate what you think your values and habits are can be super useful, especially in a therapy/coaching setting. But I think they are harmful when then used as an instruction doc from manager to team.

Here is a quick list of 100 insights I've gotten over the past decade. Any one of them you adopt, or choose to believe, will probably make your life better. Enjoy.
1. True wisdom and insight is always free.

Anyone charging you for anything is running a business. Most valuable things are freely available. That said, if you want to pay to access them more easily, go for it.
2. Give your power over to no one.

No one else has control over your life (except in a meta sense). No one is going to save you. No one else loves you as much as you (should) love yourself! So take ownership ASAP.

(P.S.: this doesn't mean we shouldn't have healthcare.)

I’m quite troubled by calls for scientists to stop flying. There’s a clear implication that travel is something scientists do on a lark and we could just say “no” with zero adverse consequences. 1/
That’s not true — going to meetings is an import part of being a scientist. It’s how you meet people and how people know what you’re doing and how you know what other people are doing. 2/
Many of these calls to reduce travel are from full professors and other senior scientists who have established careers — established, I should add, by flying a lot as younger scientists. These senior scientists have the luxury of being able to reduce their travel. 3/

Some random thoughts on recruiters and recruiting for Thursday. Some of these have happened to me, others to people I know. I'm not calling anybody out specifically (but if you're a recruiter and feel that way anyway, considering why you feel that way might be useful for you).
GET NAMES RIGHT. This is classic Dale Carnegie -- "A person's name is to that person, the sweetest, most important sound in any language." If you're so sloppy that you call me Tom in your opening message, why would I talk to you about something as important to me as my job?
Make an honest effort on names from other countries too. The number of colleagues I've had from non-English-speaking countries who go by initials or nicknames because English speakers *who work with them* don't even bother to try to get their names right is appalling.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.
