Here are all the ways the NYTimes euphemized Sen. Hyde-Smith saying she'd happily attend a "public hanging" in MS.

"rhetorical gaffes"
"imperiled through her own statements"
"controversial remarks"

-mentions "race" 9x, but all of which are in reference to the election
-mentions "racial" 2x, neither of which directly references Hyde-Smith's comment
-never mentions "racism"
And finally, note how the NYTimes presents this passage—and the critical electoral value of rural whites to Democrats' potential success—as a given. That Dems could formulate a winning coalition through other means is not considered.
