Last week I saw the Holzer exhibit at Mass MoCA where oversized paintings of literally hundreds of documents relating to US government use of torture, including autopsies, witness reports, and internal emails, covered the walls of several rooms. It took me hours to read them all.
I also saw her Lustmord Table, where excerpts from accounts of politically-motivated mass rape-murder written by witnesses, victims, and perpetrators are printed on silver bands which encircle real human bones.
If Jenny Holzer's Truisms strike you as facile, vague, faux-deep, disturbing or contradictory, you are engaging with them correctly. Extend to her the courtesy of supposing she did that on purpose.
I would die for Jenny Holzer or any other woman artist whose genius is treated like an accident
