4. The dirty secret of community management: it’s not about making people happy. You have to know when to say no, thanks for the report, but I’m on to you, fuck off.
5. Whenever you use a reporting system to punish an abuser, you’re also teaching them how to use that system. Of course they’ll turn around use it to abuse someone else. They’re abusers. That’s what they do.
6. The fact that most transactional systems have no-sex clauses is part of our prudish, sex-negative, repressed culture. So of course dickheads who are super repressed are using it to go after the targets of their desire/ire. A perfect circle of repression.
7. The fact that these transactional systems are not set up to sniff out coordinated campaigns of abuse is their failure. But I can’t see them doing much about it. Props to GitHub for doing the right thing. Another reason good harassment policers matter.
8. Incels scare me. Maybe if they spent less time punishing random women on the internet and more time learning how to have real relationships, they’d be better off.
