Reflectionsfeom Ashley, El Paso’s RadicalSocial Worker - Today I spent the afternoon at Tornillo. Josh walked with me around the perimeter of the camp.
We saw the water supply crew filling the truck, and later when we were at the fence to the facility, we learned from one of the men getting the water supply that this is the drinking water and he also pointed out to us which tent is the kitchen.
We saw the generators which supply the power, and the many new portable structures that have been brought in. Trailers with barred windows and double-wides, two of which I passed on the highway while driving to Tornillo.
I was struck by the size. The growth of this facility is unbelievable.
Then we arrived at the area outside the soccer field. Yesterday, this fence was unobstructed, and Josh and others were able to talk to the boys. Today, the fence is covered with a black tarp, but there are tears that allow you to peer through
It feels like I'm being invasive, but at the same time, I feel that these children need to see us present. Josh and I were quiet. We didn't call out to them we were just present.
The otherwise desolate road was peppered with color from soccer balls which had managed to escape over the high fencing. Is it a sense of vicarious freedom for those to watch a ball soar high over the fence?
A yellow Nike ball floats over the fence and lands across the road infront of us.
I want to cry.
