Spending the morning with Khazanah Research Institute. Key finding is that there are 4 times more graduates vs 40 years ago. Our private and corp structures have not adapted. Wages only grew 2x while edu / housing cost grew by 3-4x.
"Best" part about the mismatch? The way companies recruit are not aligned to the way job seekers look for jobs.

Companies rely on referrals as top 2nd & 3rd choice

Guess what happens? Those that have the privilege get the jobs

Full transparency, that's how I got my first job
Youth recognise that corporates hire foreign workers as a way to keep cost/wages low. Malaysian youth willing to take "3D" jobs in Singapore as pay matches job level.

I wonder if Singaporean Youth complain about Malaysian foreign workers.
KRI survey data shows:
1. 95% in the unskilled job category are over-qualified
2. All four segments rated work-life balance and job security as more important than salary.
The author of the report Dr Lin based the survey on ILO standards.

The data disagrees with the narrative that employers put out that fresh graduates want a higher salary.

Minimum wage that fresh graduates will take a job is RM1,700 per month
Almost three quarters of companies surveyed DON'T HAVE an annual budget.

The headline is "employers play a limited role in enhancing youth employability".

What are your thoughts? Who is "responsible"? The youth, academic institutions or employers?
Datin Dr Syahira pointed out that MOHE had heavily invested in Biotech studies but graduates returned without jobs. Mainly due to requirement of work experience and many industry players were hiring foreigners.
Datin Dr Syahira also shared that many industry players request for hard content over skills. E.g. palm oil industry wants a palm oil syllabus, anti-corruption wants anti-corruption syllabus.
Datin Dr Syahira agreed that the mindset of entrepreneurship is prioritised to navigate the workforce over "starting a company".

She shared that youth unemployment is particularly challenging in Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Kelantan.
Datin Dr Syahira shared that MOHE is shifting towards work based training and learning to address work experience but not many industry players are ready to accept, train and evaluate students for the scale required.
Dr Suraya of KRI shared that risk of over responding to existing industry needs would put innovation at risk as the industry players are equally not investing enough in R&D.

The case of government being at the centre of R&D should be reconsidered.
The report also calls out "loss boys".

Boys are less educated but are overrepresented in the formal labour market as women have to attend to social expectations.

Good news is that it's mainly women in this roundtable & they are speaking up.

Not sure if they are tweeting. 😂
Ooops. Tweeted too soon.

A gentleman has turned the discussion into a lecture.
Latifah of KNB shared that SLIM participants tend to come from poorly located universities or institutions of higher education that are not close to areas of commerce or industry.
Shahrin of CDC pointed put that reskilling of Malaysian Airlines former staff faced major ageism from Malaysian employers. Foreign employers recognised the experience. CDC had to shift to upskilling. I.e. teaching a 40yo secretary excel skills.
