Audio feels under explored, and I don’t mean as a form of input. Note how different a photo and video makes you feel. What feelings are triggered when you see an Instagram feed of images versus watching a YouTube video by that same influencer?
For me, if I see a bunch of influencer pictures, over time I may feel worse about myself in comparison (or worse yet, subconsciously pass judgement). But if I’m watching that same influencer’s video of say a closet reveal, I’m happy for her. There’s no envy, just entertainment.
Might just be me but audio has a unique way of humanizing an individual. In a day where texting is bolted onto so many apps, why not more audio? It especially makes a difference in stranger to stranger interactions.
Perhaps audio/video help us feel like we know someone better. Is it possible that Stories are so great not because they allow us to tell a narrative but because they humanize the influencer? Photos don’t expose the same vulnerability.
Pure text can also accomplish the same thing. There’s an authenticity to Twitter influencers like @chrissyteigen that make her so relatable, it feels like she’s your friend! Or the Ellen or Oprah of Twitter
When looking at consumer phenomenons and new features, I love thinking about the feelings they address and create. Some feed the seven deadly sins, some don’t. It’s not what determines stickiness or success, but it’s always something I think about.
