Patients with Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have a higher risk of suffering a stroke

1. Persons with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis have an increased risk of developing thrombo-embolic events. A recently published study looked at the association between IBD & stroke.…
2. >85,000 patients with IBD were followed up long-term (1969-2019), and the risk of stroke in them was compared to those without IBD.
Patients with IBD had 14% higher risk of suffering from ischemic stroke during follow up.

3. The elevated risk of stroke remained increased even 25 years after diagnosis, corresponding to one additional stroke case per 93 IBD patients until then.

#Ramadan and #IBD: Should folks with IBD fast?

This one is a 5-part tweetorial because it deserves due diligence

A data desert 🌵 so I’ll do my best & apologies in advance for what I forget or omit

Let’s dive in! @southasianIBD @ibdtweets @ibddoctor

One way to try and understand the relationship between Ramadan fasting & IBD is by subgroups:

1️⃣ patients with IBD in remission
2️⃣ hospitalized with active disease
3️⃣ undifferentiated IBD patients
4️⃣ animal models of fasting & IBD
5️⃣ extrapolations from rheumatology

Available data from 🇮🇷 suggests

this group is NOT at risk of ⬆️ symptom burden while fasting ‼️🤷🏽

Emulsifiers! You unknowingly consume them daily. They are in almost every readymade food. But what are these and what impact they have on your #health. In below thread, i explore the world of #emulsifiers and why you should avoid them. #HealthyLiving #weightloss #processedfood
Emulsifiers are detergent that combine different substances together. Certain substances in food are water soluble & others are fat soluble. How to mix them together? Add emulsifiers & voila - problem solved
The emulsifiers mostly have names that is difficult to pronounce but you can see them in food ingredients list on packaging. Common ones are polysorbate 20, 60 or 80 (P80), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), sorbitran, propylene glycol, sodium stearoyl lactylate, Gum arabic

🚨🚨I'm proud to present our lab's first peer-reviewed paper, out at @cellhostmicrobe🥳. We started out by asking a basic question about mucus secretion, and discovered something surprising about genetic risk to inflammatory bowel diseases (#IBD). A🧵/1…
Every cell that secretes something needs to have some kind of control over how much it secretes. We asked how goblet cells in the intestine "know" how much mucus they need to secrete. I wrote about it here when we published our #preprint 👇🏻. /2
We found that ER stress is the cell-intrinsic switch that tells the goblet cell when to stop producing mucus, and that autophagy is tasked with relieving this stress to allow secretion. /3

1. For Providers, events like Take Steps are great opportunity to get to know patients outside of 🏥 @CrohnsColitisFn. Patients also appreciate providers getting to know what is important in day-to-day life to put in context of IBD treatment goals #SharedDecisionMaking
2. It is helpful for adolescent & young adult #IBD patients to also talk to 🧑‍⚕️ w/o parent present to help develop autonomy. Parents should discuss with kids who to discuss dx and how much to share. Validated tests such as PHQ-9 can help screen for anxiety and depression
