@sallamar Serverless is not someone else managing your servers. Serverless is you agreeing that your code doesn't get to depend on long term implicit state. It's not really no physical servers, it's no daemons.

This removes SME load for external ops.

@sallamar @jessfraz @kelseyhightower Clouds can do lots of things to drag your code around from physical node to physical node, and oh they do, but they don't get to change the apparent size of the guest resource, or expand available resources in a semantically meaningful way.
@sallamar @jessfraz @kelseyhightower It *feels* like this has long been a solved problem, the cloud provider just runs more or less VM's.

The problem is granularity. Monolithic daemons keep leaking bits. It's manageable of course, but you know what's better than managing? Not needing to.

To maintain consistency of governance in existing institutions, the British system uses Shadow Secretaries. Brexit requires *new* institutions, because the world of 2018 isn't the same world from before the EU.

So, what I would say is: Pause Brexit. Build Shadow Institutions.
They may be new, they may be a transformation of the old, this may or may not be possible. But the whole magic of the Shadow model isn't just that there are competent people, but that outsiders know who they are, what they'd be dealing with, what sort of deal they can rely on.
You want a deal, build working systems that can make a deal. Build Shadow Institutions that are credible internally, and externally, on the model of Shadow Secretaries. Treat the Article 50 trigger as policy that looked better on paper and didn't work in practice. That happens!

I know it's a little presumptuous for an American to comment on Brexit, but hear me out.

One of the things I've really admired about British political architecture has been the concept of Shadow Secretaries. At any moment, there are certainly going to be parties not in power.
But political winds may change, new coalitions may form, and who is in charge of what may change. That new talent is *ready* for this eventuality, already trained and known and competent to the degree one can be without actually having the job -- that's pretty cool!
Of course, we have some of that in America -- ranking members from each party on each committee in our legislature -- but Shadow Secretaries deal directly with executing the burdens of statecraft. And they are burdens. Policy is *hard*, execution doubly so.

This is complicated, but at least it’s a technically analyzable situation. Warning everyone now, I am *absolutely* speaking in a neutral capacity here. I may not support your politics, or my own.

Summary: Video compression might have done it. It was probably edited.
First, the type of edit here claimed is not rare at all. I’ve generally heard it referred to as, well, “frame f***ing”. Happens to television shows quite a bit in syndication — scenes aren’t removed, but they’re sped up just enough to add an ad or two.
I say this because while the tech *exists* to do deep fakery, slicing frames here and there is a pretty common and well understood mechanism. It’s like an audio mixing app making the vocals louder (memories of Howard Dean).

So I am a traditionally published author. This means that, under ideal circumstances, someone else assumes the risk of printing, storage, distribution, etc., and I am paid a percentage of whatever they make when they sell a book.
Most of my publishers (DAW, Tor.com, Orbit, Marvel) are Quite Large, and very equipped to assume this risk. I never become involved with the supply chain and, to date, none of my books with these publishers have gone out of print/reverted to me.

1. The no deal #Brexit advocates are in full spin mode. They say we can trade on WTO terms alone. So anybody with a clue asks them about aviation and nuclear sectors etc where they mutter something about bilateral deals. That's an admission that we cannot trade on WTO rules alone
2. They then pretend we can have an amicable negotiated exit to WTO rules. We can't. This would be a package with all the bilaterals covering aviation and nuclear - there bare minimum to avoid civil emergencies. It would not include any mutual recognition on anything.
3. There is no way the EU would sign such an agreement without the existing agreements on citizens rights, the financial settlement and the NI backstop. There is no rowing back from that. The government would have to agree or there is no deal.

“Transition to cloud” comes up lots but could use some discussion. We all _know_ what it means…analysts get confused.
“Transition to cloud” is usually applied to companies that existed before the cloud, no matter what they make/sell.

There are two aspects that are often confused/conflated: product implementation and product pricing licensing. Think of only one confuses risk/reward.
Some big companies have been working hard to transition both. Three big success stories are Adobe, Microsoft, SAP. They are on different time scales and differ in both product and pricing.

I want to talk about misogyny, sexism, and predatory/manipulative behavior in the local independent music scene in my experiece.
People who have been following me before 2016-2017 aka my thesis year know that I was quite deeply embedded in the local music scene before. I went to gigs quite often (at least once a month for me), was friends with lots of musicians and artists, etc.
Hell, my thesis was about the local indie music scene. That’s how much I love local music and our urban culture.

But since 2016, I have had to distance myself from the scene for many reasons.
