BBC anchor asked me last night why Brazil is so “polarized.”

Thing is, it’s really not.

Only about 15% of country opposed to Bolsonaro, polls show. Others support him or have open mind. This typical of Brazilian presidents at start of term - but a major difference w Trump
Bolsonaro *could* lose support over time but remember Dilma had support in 70s more than 2+ yrs into her term. Times were different then but if he can get an economic rebound he may be quite popular for awhile - and powerful
The 15% opposed to Bolsonaro includes disproportionate amount of analysts, media and intl types you find here on Twitter. I am constantly trying to remind myself of this - it’s not a representative sample of popular opinion in Brazil
In Dec 13 Ibope poll, 75% said Bolsonaro on “right track.” 14% disagreed, rest said they didn’t know veja.abril.com.br/politica/ibope…
More. This is “expectations,” not approval per se, but shows roughly same breakdown of a strong opposition of 10-15%. Again, in line w previous presidents
