A reminder that responding to xenophobic rhetoric by saying things like "But Steve Jobs' dad was an immigrant!" or "Albert Einstein was an immigrant!" while well-intentioned, contribute to the idea that immigration should only be understood in transactional, capitalistic terms.
No one should have to justify seeking safety for their family by trying to convince us that they'll invent new technology or cure cancer or make people rich. Market-based ideologies have tried to tell us that these are the metrics we should use, rather than our sense of empathy.
I'm less interested in immigration policy that's trying to find the next Steve Jobs than I am in policies that treat people escaping violence & poverty with dignity & compassion.

I’ve spent the past year interviewing black ppl who were sentenced to life w/o parole when they were children, as young as 13, many for crimes they didn’t commit.

I don’t want to belabor the Covington thing, but it’s distressing to see who public empathy is & is not extended to.
What’s come up in every conversation is that they felt like ppl in the system didn’t care & didn’t even see them as children. There’s extensive research on the adultification of black youth, but it’s been quite another thing to see it result in a child sentenced to life in a cage
Anyway, this is for my dissertation, which I should be writing instead of tweeting. Time to get back at it.

As part of the deal that's been reached, each school in LA will now have a nurse, which is great. It's also a shame that it took this strike to achieve such a basic need. As teachers have pointed out, it reflects what some people think black & brown children do & don't deserve.
I have a difficult time imagining that in an affluent white school, having a single nurse available would ever be something that was up for debate. And yet when it comes to certain children, some think that the most basic services are things to be haggled over.
Grateful to the teachers in LA for fighting so relentlessly for their students.

If you’re doing an MLK day service project, consider bringing a King-level analysis to it. For example, don’t just serve lunch at a soup kitchen, interogate why we allow millions of ppl to live in poverty in the first place.

King’s legacy isn’t about charity, it’s about justice.
I always found the idea of doing a “service project” to honor MLK a bit strange. Service is a good thing, but if you’re going to do it, especially today, push yourself to ask *why* the landscape of inequality exists as it does today. Question the systems & structures & history.
So many grow up thinking Dr. King’s birthday is about painting classrooms & cleaning up trash from the park. But MLK wouldn’t just paint a classroom, he’d ask why schools are underfunded. He wouldn’t just pick up trash, he’d ask why certain communities suffer from more pollution.

Steve Jobs once said that he didn't listen to market research because it told you what people wanted, not what they didn't know they wanted yet. (I'm paraphrasing.)

Our salvation and destruction as a species lies in that one idea.
Consumer capitalism does not simply respond to what people want; it goes out of its way to convince people that they want what it chooses to sell. This is the primary purpose of marketing, product placement, etc. It also creates artificial obsolescence and scarcity.
That's fine, if you have unlimited resources and your production and supply chain create no footprint. If you find the wardrobe that leads to that magical realm, you let me know.

This isn't the only case of a celebrity charity being a dismal failure or being questioned about its efforts. Wyclef Jean's charity was accused of mishandling $16 million in donations for Haiti. businessinsider.com/wyclefs-haiti-…
Some of the problem is these celebrities are well intentioned, but have no idea what they are doing and hire people that know even less. There are also others that have done exceptionally well in charitable causes like JJ Watt in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

I think it’s more complicated than that, which I will explain when I’m not driving.
OK. So, climate issues, obviously, are more challenging to get eyes on. IMHO, because of the following reasons.
1. Climate Change as a concept is not about people, it's a complex and nuanced science thinger that can be hard to grasp.
2. There has been a long term effort by specific parties with their own agendas to destroy the credibility of anything considered to be a fact when it doesn't fit their narrative. People often think a scientific theory is the same as a layman's theory. Then it becomes "2 sides."
