I’ve spent the past year interviewing black ppl who were sentenced to life w/o parole when they were children, as young as 13, many for crimes they didn’t commit.

I don’t want to belabor the Covington thing, but it’s distressing to see who public empathy is & is not extended to.
What’s come up in every conversation is that they felt like ppl in the system didn’t care & didn’t even see them as children. There’s extensive research on the adultification of black youth, but it’s been quite another thing to see it result in a child sentenced to life in a cage
Anyway, this is for my dissertation, which I should be writing instead of tweeting. Time to get back at it.

today i had a burger made of lentils instead of meat & i was like wow this is delicious like i think it might be better than an actual burger which is to say my world has been turned upside down shout out to lentils some might call it a veggie burger but i call it a revelation
so a lot of people responded to this & said I should try the impossible burger, so i went on a trek to find an impossible burger & y’all...this thing took me to another level, it taste *just like meat* but *it’s not meat* how?!? i don’t know how they did this im so glad they did

When I was in Mississippi this week, I looked up & saw the state flag waving above me, the confederate flag embedded in its top corner.

It remains so appalling that such a flag is allowed to exist at all, but *especially* in a state w/the highest % of black ppl in the country.
We’ve been over this before, we know the Confederate flag represents treason, we know it represents white supremacy, we know it represents a lie about this country that has been told over & over again.

And yet, in 2019, it still sits conspicuously within the Mississippi flag.
We can’t disentangle a decision to wear blackface from a story this country has long told about black ppl.

And we can’t disentangle the story this country has long told about black ppl from a Confederate flag flying in a state w/the largest % of black folks.

It’s all connected.

Nobody writes about hip-hop the way @NifMuhammad does. There’s such a profound sense of love & generosity for the culture, the art form, & those who are a part of its lineage. This passage on Phife Dawg is case in point.
As is the case with any book Hanif writes about music, it’s about so much more than music.
I am here to inform you that @NifMuhammad has done the damn thing once again. Three books in three years & all of them are bangers. How lucky we are to have be alive at the same time he’s writing.

Yes our clients are real people with families, so maybe they don't want to be in a story about them being charged with a crime.

And if they do, maybe they would like to use different photos & have some context to their stories rather than just being represented by a mugshot.
Some tabloid newspapers have voluntarily agreed not to use mugshots in their reporting because they are problematic.

Newspapers like @nytimes would not normally use them in the same way.

The idea that they would use them in what's meant to be a "positive" story is troubling.
Newspapers don't have to publish something just because it's a matter of public record. Sometimes they don't, even when it's newsworthy.

Here it wasn't necessary - just a fancy graphics thing.

I am so glad the fact that public defender offices are vastly underfunded has made the @nytimes.

But I hate this article.

There's a nice picture of the lawyer in a suit & then there's all his nameless clients' mugshots plastered at the top of the page.

The photos helpfully flash on & off as you read how many cases he has, which are felonies, who is facing life w/o parole etc. But the clients are never named & we're never told their stories.

Then there are photos in court of clients in cuffs taken from behind with time stamps.
I think the point is to emphasize how people are shunted through the system and if public defender offices aren'f funded properly they don't even act as a stop gap.

But the photos are of actual people. It comes across as exploitative.

Outrageous: 16 y/o sex slave. A survivor. Terrified. Killed her last purchaser. Ineligible for release for 51 years.
For those asking: This was the Tennessee Supreme Court’s decision *on appeal.* She’s been incarcerated since 2004 when she was 16. She’s now in her 30s. Will have to serve 37 more years.
What about those Supreme Court decisions overruling life w/o parole sentences for juveniles? Her lawyers argued in 2012 that her sentence was “de facto life w/o parole.” Court disagreed. Bc she was technically eligible for release (even though a lifetime later) that was that.

My date followed up by asking, “If your boyfriend asked you to cook for him, would you?” I grinned, as I realised my date was sadly playing from a script. I replied, “I don’t have a guy I like who’s asking me to cook, so I can’t say.”
I think my date thought I was being coy. But, I wasn’t. I was just being honest. A while ago, I decided to deal in reality and not hypotheticals. I have tried and failed to control life. All my effort got me was an anxiety problem and therapy.

We need to pay attention to--and work to end--the use of solitary confinement. It is there, in the long-term lockdowns & sensory deprivation conditions that daily house upwards of 100,000 people in US, where the cruel endgame of American punishment is made clear. 1/
