Re-upping this in light of Pelosi's announcement that there will be no State of the Union address until after Trump agrees to reopen the government. stoehr.substack.com/p/is-trump-ask…
Key section: I don’t know what Pelosi’s response will be, but it’s hard to imagine she gives in. Indeed, I think the more salient question is this: when will she tell Trump that he can’t come to the House of Representatives? Before tomorrow Senate vote or afterward?
If she informs him before tomorrow’s vote, she will give Trump and the Republicans a way out of the shutdown. Senate Republicans can vote for the Democratic measure and reopen the government, thus providing proper security and the center of national attention to the president.
If she informs him afterward, then all she gets is the satisfaction of humiliating him. I think Nancy Pelosi is too practical for that.

2. I’m not the first to suggest that decades from now, after this is over, our children will look back at the present moment in history, and ask: how in God’s name did the Donald Trump Scandal go on for so long?
3. Most crimes were committed for anyone to see if they were paying attention. How could people see them but not admit they were seeing them? It’s as if the country suffered from a temporary fit of blindness.

1. He hasn’t announced formally his intentions yet, but I think Joe Biden is already a zombie candidate. Most of us can’t it quite see it. As the nomination process gets underway, however, the truth of the matter will become more apparent.
2. In a way, Biden has been running for president his whole life. The problem has always involved timing, and shifting political landscapes. His 1988 campaign, for instance, was derailed over accusations of plagiarism.
3. That’s laughable by today’s standards, as the current president, his spouse and administration think nothing of stealing copy from any source any time without fear of being held accountable for dishonesty.

1. For 33 days ago, I have argued Trump is the weakest part of the shutdown fight. The GOP has no reason to budge. Neither do Democrats. Trump does. His polls are sliding, but that doesn’t matter as much as something else: The shutdown threatens his being the center of attention.
2. Pelosi said last week Trump should submit his SOTU address in writing or wait until after gov't reopens. That way, the Secret Service, which is working w/o pay, can provide proper security for the event. Meanwhile, as Steny Hoyer said, “the State of the Union is off.”
3. While Trump’s aides told reporters that Pelosi’s letter made no difference, it clearly did. The president felt spiteful enough not only to ground her military flight to Afghanistan last week but to leak her destination to the press, effectively putting a target on her back.

In the case of the State of the Union Address, I think Trump should accept Nancy's shutdown of the Address being held in the House. Its her right as a petty democrat operative ...

1.Article II Section 3 of the Constitution

He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.
2.The President is NOT REQUIRED to deliver a speech, every president since Woodrow Wilson, with exception of Herbert Hoover has made at least one State of the Union report as a speech delivered before a joint session of Congress. Before that time as a written report.

BREAKING: Speaker Pelosi sends letter to President Trump suggesting they postpone his State of the Union address until after the government has been reopened, or deliver the address in writing, a practice that was common in the 1800s and early 1900s.
JUST IN: In tit-for-tat response, President Trump informs Speaker Pelosi via letter that her foreign trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan "has been postponed" until after the government shutdown is over, unless she uses commercial travel.
White House official says Speaker Pelosi and delegation were set to use military aircraft for foreign trip, which allowed the president to halt the movement.

The letter also reveals travel plans, including a visit to a war zone, for person who is second in line to presidency.
