I love the workers and the labor movement but it's actually a hard complicated thing to figure out and I say this as a person who has been covering it for over a decade now and still constantly playing catch-up
this is connected to all the reporter layoffs honestly, I think there's maybe one or two full-time labor journalists who actually have full-time jobs doing this right now. the rest of us are freelancers, broke, and constantly undermined by people thinking what we do is easy
anyway I've had a great few weeks in terms of my work, the news is heartening finally for the labor movement but awful for journalism, and it's exhausting to try to figure out how to work in this environment
This point is also important. How many labor unions trip over themselves to get reporters in like, USA Today to cover their shit and do it badly.
It's not going to solve everything but it'd be nice if labor respected those of us busting our butts for no money to cover labor
I will MAYBE break even on what I spent to go to LA to cover the UTLA strike, and I'm able to do that because the good folks at @TypeMediaCenter support my work.
