I agree with what @DrEstellePrnq is saying and the frustration. There is a fine balance to be struck and some films will get it right, while others won't. There are so many factors at play that go into making a film.
Often the tone and angle of the film, which is decided at the outset, during the creative process determines the level of accuracy - if the film will be light- hearted, revisionist, faithful to history, or a 'modern' interpretation of events.
A lot of historical inaccuracy creeps in due to budgetary constraints: they can't afford to film on a ship, in a palace, or hire 3000 extras. A lot of people have influence on what's seen on screen - actors change lines or claim 'their character wouldn't do something.
However there is also a very important point to be made - film and tv are extremely influential and potent mediums. Their reach far surpasses the reach of a nonfiction book on a historical subject. Film has the power to shape our understanding of our past and our identities.
Studies have shown that even when people have read about an episode in history and have and understanding of the 'facts', after seeing a film on the subject they are more likely to remember the film version of history rather than what they've previously understood to be correct.
So, to say 'people understand that it's just a movie' isn't always correct. Not everyone will go on to read a book on the subject. In effect, the filmmakers, whatever their intention, have the last word where most people are concerned. Their works help shape our perceptions.
Whether or not they want this responsibility, they have it. To ignore the power of film is to be wilfully ignorant. To say 'its just entertainment' is like saying heroin is just a bit of fun. It's more than that.
However, there's no correct way of addressing this issue. Responsibility rests with us: to fact check, to support and value an educational system that teaches critical reasoning and a society that respects books and the study of history.
