Morning thoughts: Sometimes white FB friends post photos from an evening out & everyone w/ them appears white. Then I look thru their other pics & same deal. I wonder: Am I their 1 black friend? How many white folks claim proximity to me as a shield against accusations of racism?
And if I *am* the only black friend of many white folks I know, what’s my responsibility for or complicity in their white liberalism? Been thinking about this after I heard someone I sort of know claiming to be friends with me in a discussion about race & I was like who? what? 🤔
FYI if you’re Facebook friends with me we aren’t necessarily friends. If you follow me we aren’t necessarily friends. You can’t claim me as friend if we’ve never had a one on one convo or you can’t name basic shit about me like where I’m from, my partners’ names, etc.
I know public presence plus all this femme friendliness makes folks feel like they know me, but friendship is a two way street. You can’t say I’m your friend if I wouldn’t call you that myself. Just sayin. Social media connections aren’t necessarily real relationships.
