Good morning from the Paris courthouse where a verdict is expected today in the trial of two former elite police officers who are accused of raping a Canadian tourist in 2014.

Here's the backstory:

ctvnews.ca/mobile/world/2…
She met the off-duty officers at an Irish pub and after a night of flirting and heavy drinking, they invited her to their nearby HQ, the prestigious 36 Quai des Orfèvres, where she claimed she was gang-raped.
Lawyers for the cops raised questions about her lifestyle, her behaviour with men and pointed to what they say are serious inconsistencies & contradictions in her story.

(E.g she claimed she too was a police officer - she isn't)

Her lawyers framed this as a trial about consent. She arrived at the "36" happy and jovial and left in a complete state of shock, reporting the alleged crime to a female officer on duty.

The general prosecutor yesterday: "There are no good or bad victims"

If you read French & have the slightest interest in how a case like this plays out in a French court - it triggered lots of criticism of victim shaming - worth going through these two feeds: @TiboChevillard & @aureliesarrot

6 hrs later & still no verdict. Media attention intense here partly because the 2 cops accused of rape by a Canadian woman belonged to the same unit that stormed the Bataclan the night of the terror attack. They're seen as heroes...Which is why her claim was initially dismissed
Verdict expected in next 10 min.
Most of the people in the courtroom are off-duty cops here to support the 2 accused. Both cried this morning as they addressed the jury. "I am not a rapist," one said repeatedly. If guilty they face up to 20 years in prison.

#breaking 2 French cops found guilty of raping Canadian woman Emily Spanton.

Five years after her claim of having been gang-raped in the prestigious 36 Quai D'Orfèvres was dismissed, Spanton is sitting in tears, a few meters away from the men who abused her.
One of the accused cops is shaking his head in disbelief and also crying.

The 2 cops are sentenced to 7 years each in prison. They have 10 days to appeal.
