The scam is to find "feel good" projects like fishing, mining, etc and then get banks to mortgage "assets" still in the ground. By the time they discover there is no magic pixie dust, the banksters and politicians are off to the UAE. Who do you think buys those ugly condos?

In 1994 the first democratic government of South Africa inherited R250-billion in Apartheid debt. This was painfully paid off by 2001. President Mandela at the time expressed his frustration at having to pay back debts instead of building 1 million houses in 5 years for the poor.
Politics and economics were discussed separately during pre-94 negotiations. The Apartheid government poured most of their energy into the economic negotiations in concert with international groups like the IMF, the World Bank, and other foreign investors.

One of the world's most haunting ruined places is the ghost town of Kolmanskop, in the desert of Southern Namibia.

Once a thriving mining town, it now sits in an enormous "restricted zone" where people are still forbidden to enter, and is slowly being reclaimed by the sands.
One evening in 1908, a humble railway worker named Zacherias Lewala was working on the rails in the Southern Namib desert, shovelling them clear of the sand dunes that constantly roll over the land.

While working, he saw some strange-looking stones shining in the evening light.
Lewala picked up the stones & took them to his employer, who identified them for what they were: rough diamonds.

The find caused a sensation. Soon hordes of prospectors descended on the area, & this unassuming site became a new frontier in the diamond rush.

1. A short thread on the life of Krotoa (Eva) because it's clear many of you know very little about her. Krotoa was the niece of Autshumao, a Khoi leader and interpreter to the Dutch who called him Harry/Herry. She was born around 1643 in the area we currently know as Cape Town.
2. In 1652, when she was 10/11, in the first few days of the Dutch settlement at the Cape, Krotoa was taken to work as a servant for Jan Van Riebeek's wife, Maria. She is first mentioned in Jan van Riebeek's diary in 1654 as 'a girl who had lived with us'.
3. Krotoa learned Dutch and Portugese and was very responsive to the Christian teaching she received from Maria. The Dutch quickly recognised her usefulness as an interpreter and go-between with the Khoi. She helped negotiate the peace treaty to end the 1st Khoi-Dutch war in 1860
