Let’s talk about the Klan vs the Confederacy bc people like Cruz seem to think there is some huge difference.
The romanticizing of the Confederacy — the lost cause, the heritage but not hate crap — was also attempted with the Klan. It’s the entire plot of Birth of a Nation, where the Klan is clearly the First Order to the Confederacy’s Empire.
Over the years, the KKK came to be associated with rednecks and “white trash.” This was not always the case. Hint: Redneck losers don’t have much reason to hide their identities, do they?
Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, was also involved with the klan. The KKK was for years closely tied to the Confederacy, a natural evolution of its insidious cause.
But the Confederacy somehow was separated from the KKK, and became viewed as a reasonable part of US heritage.
This is a lie. The Confederacy was equally a terrorist organization. Its primary goal was the continued enslavement of black people.
The Confederacy, had it won, would have had the Klan, they just wouldn’t have needed hoods. They would’ve worn Confederate uniforms but would’ve used Klan tactics to terrorize black people, especially if resistance continued against slavery.
Unfortantely, we teach little of Klan like tactics in the antebellum South.
There is a weird irony that Republicans posing with Confederate flags or in Confederate uniforms is not considered in the same context as a Klan robe.
And it is a common failing of American capitalism that we celebrate capitalist excess without recognizing any evils that made it possible. Your plantation party is rooted in evils like the Klan.
