It's astounding how many white moderates/even white liberals think Native Americans should extend the emotional labor to improve racist white teens. No consideration is thought to the safety and security of minorities.
"Spend time at a Native American community" is subtly presented as a form of punishment. Did *any* white person watching the unrest in Ferguson or Baltimore suggest sending "rioting" black teens to Cape Cod for the summer? "Some lobster rolls would turn these kids around."
Black kids *do* get to spend time in white communities, but as a someone who did this, it was always as a "reward" for perceived excellence (academically more often in my case or bc I played tennis poorly, athletically once or twice).
This kid is a monster. It's infuriating to see how predictably white people -- esp. white women in journalism -- center the humanity of monsters from their tribe. wonkette.com/this-is-the-fu…
If my son ever stepped out of line, this push to "redeem" wouldn't be there. It wouldn't have been for me. Every black child grows up knowing that this isn't an option for them. We step out of line, nice white people will rush to chop off our foot.
I *still* hear white people deride the parenting of a black woman who let her child out of her sight for five minutes so a gorilla wound up getting shot. And the black woman who smacked her child in public for protesting was hailed as "mother of the year."
No one suggests racist kid get slapped. No, just Native American summer camp, where if everyone there is PERFECT at all times, he will still likely remain racist.
