Heading back to #MDCBrooklyn now. Hearing that family members of those incarcerated have been pepper sprayed. Joining colleagues bringing our legal pads & pens, as well as our phones, to document. 25 minutes away. More soon.
From my colleague just leaving: “The organizers are doing a great job & there’s a mic now - lots of community organizers & formerly incarcerated people are speaking. Please don’t let the pepper spray scare you away - the numbers out there are good but each supporter matters.”
“If you’re still cold and need heat, bang on those windows!”

“If you need medication, bang on those windows!!”

They’re still banging. Loudly.
Circle of prayer:

“We should be judged by how we treat our prisoners. We need to turn this around.”
Signs.

Of support. Of love. Of despair.
There is now a table set up to collect information from family members about people incarcerated with medical conditions that need to be addressed.
Hundreds lined up hand in hand. Stretching the entire length of the facility and beyond. Listen to those incarcerated banging. It hasn’t let up for a second.
Just nonstop rapping on the windows. Gut-wrenching.
This woman with a walker showed up in solidarity.
This is true.
Con Edison just showed up. Men in blue hard hats walked in to very skeptical cheers.
Talking with loved ones now who say they’ve been here for days and days and this is the first time they’ve seen Con Edison.
What are these corrections officers doing standing outside staring down protestors but to intimidate?
A photo of corrections officers standing outside, arm and arm for no reason I can think of other than to intimidate.
Not intimidated.
Wide angle.
Offerings for the protestors. Needed for energy and warmth. Coffee. Bananas. Oranges. Granola bars. Pizza. Donuts. Peanuts.
Loudspeaker family tributes—

CJ’s mom: “We love you. We’re here for you.”

Marcus’s godmother: “We love you . We miss you.”

Theo’s 4 year old nephew. “I love my Theo so much.”

Pete’s wife: “I’m out here Pete. Love you.”

Aki’s sister: “No one deserves to be treated like this.
An amazing thing. Calling out names one at a time. And when the name is called, all banging from all those who are inside stops. Silence. To allow the one person they’re calling out to respond. Once they do, all attention goes to him. Goes in the direction of that window.
Reporters out in force. Good thing.
I won’t be watching the Super Bowl tonight. But I will be thinking about this sign. And those brutally, unnecessarily lost at the hands of law enforcement.
“We love you. We love you.”
Had to head out. Feel guilty but family in town. But so good to see so many amazing advocates out in force and just showing up as I was leaving. It’ll be a night.
