*This* is the face of Trump's war on immigrants. A 17-month-old baby. Juliet. Returned last night to her mom. Asylum seekers from Honduras. Separated & detained by ICE for 2 months. This is the scene from SFO. Listen to her cries. Bear witness. This is trauma. This is too much.
And just think: Like 300k other asylum seekers in the U.S., their struggle to survive has only just begun. Difficulty paying for rent, food, or childcare. Often w/o legal or other support services. Donate to the "While They Wait" Fund to help. Whiletheywait.org/#give
"I was devastated, not knowing what to do," Juliet's mother, Sindy Flores said. "Impotent knowing she was somewhere else and not with me."nbcbayarea.com/news/local/18-…
This sounds strange, but Juliet & her family are among the "lucky ones." They had extraordinary advocacy help. @ConMijente stepped up: Set up a GoFundMe, helped w/ paperwork, press outreach, contacted members of congress. Today, they're helping find lawyers & housing options.
It's still a long road ahead. But they have support. Most do not. No money for necessities like housing, food, clothing. No right to a lawyer to help navigate the legal landscape. Inability to work w/o delayed work authorizations. YOU CAN DO SOMETHING: WhileTheyWait.org.
Border agents told Juliet’s parents: “I don’t care if your kid dies.” They said something similar to Nilda. When they ripped her from her 2-year-old & she begged & pleaded: “This is what happens when you come to my country.” Literally heartless. Her story:
PEOPLE: Like I said, Sindy & Juliet’s struggle has just begun. They have no home. Seeking temporary housing. Please DM @ConMijente with any tips.👇.
For those wondering about her other 2 children: Sindy, her husband, & 3 children made fled Honduras. Sindy & 2 older children were separated from Juliet & dad in Mexico. Made it to SF. Dad & Juliet we’re detained & separated by ICE when they entered US. Dad still in detention.
Update: @ConMijente found the family an apartment in the city from a generous for 3 weeks. 6 generous offers. Thank you.
YOU CAN DO SOMETHING. Sindy & Juliet are just 2 of 300k asylum seekers currently in deportation proceedings waiting to find out if they can stay w/ little, if any, resources for basic necessities, & little to no access to legal or support services. Give: whiletheywait.org/#give
UPDATE: "My daughter is different from the last time I saw her. She was very playful. Very happy. Now she’s afraid of people. Not the same." Juliet also has a chest cold never revealed to her. "Immigration doesn’t need to be this harsh with people like us."sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/video/4019830-…
