OK, went down the regional governance rabbit hole again...I should really stop this.

There are three municipalities in Peel (1.38 million), five in Halton (0.55 million), eight in Durham (0.65 million) & nine in York (1.11 million).

Mississauga is approximately 0.8 million. 1/4

Remove Mississauga from Peel & Peel's population goes down to about 0.65 million ... around the same as Durham.

But Durham is 8 municipalities and now Peel is only 2.

But if this new Peel is merged with Halton, there will be 7 local municipalities, 1.1 million population. 2/4

This would put Mississauga in an interesting situation. It'd be a single tier municipality with control of its own revenues but could have much of its infrastructure (initially) in the control of Peel-Halton (with its new larger population & more land for housing development).3/4

New Peel-Halton could continue to finance itself through development in west & northwest Brampton, North Oakville, Milton & Halton Hills. Mississauga would have to depend less on population growth and more on job creation & (hopefully) a more sustainable tax revenue base. 4/4

(Note: whatever may happen to governance at the regional level, Oakville, Milton, and Brampton will continue to use development revenues to fund growth, infrastructure.& services. Mississauga's revenues will depend on population growth, tax reform, job creation & efficiencies.)

Correction...that should be six municipalities in a combined Peel-Halton (assuming Mississauga is removed from Peel).
