At (great) risk of triggering same, many Twitter attacks on @maggieNYT were sexist—far more than equally prominent male colleagues—or blaming her for things she reported on, or for somebody else dubbing her “the Trump whisperer” or for failings in NYT coverage she was not part of
I’ve never met Maggie, btw. But the toxic blasts that (mostly) men from across he political disproportionately aim at women is real. The “I can’t control what my followers do” excuse is lame. And on the left, hypocritical to the extreme.
And I have been VERY critical of NYT coverage. On Iraq, on Trump/Russia, on emails, on Brooklyn trend stories.
Also, and again I don't know Maggie, but I read her tweet and writing and TV hits re Trump to contain a lot of bone-dry wit about him. And I must point out that women are NEVER accorded the same credit re a sense of humor/irony/insight as men, here especially.
Good jokes aren't as praised as they are for men. Jokes that fall flat are wildly spun into insane virtue signalling points. I got like 10 guys in my DMs rn saying, "yeah you're right," but how many will say publicly?
Christopher Hitchens, beloved by many on right and left, could say that women aren't as funny as men and you know? It's because women aren't HEARD to be as funny or cutting or whatever as men. And that gets worse, the older you get.
Ok, I went down the Haberman conspiracy rabbit hole and found intergenerational sexism. "Maggie's mom works for Trump." Maggie's mom, once a reporter herself at the NYPost, works for Rubenstein, which is one of the biggest PR firms in NYC, maybe world and...
The crazy conspiracy theories and blog posts all seem to spring from this paragraph, in Elle: elle.com/culture/career…
Her parents were reporters. Her mom went on to book publishing and then PR, a typical career arc (and often the only way for women to advance then), and MH grew up reporting on Trump. But folks are super eager to smear her and her mom in some kind of trialateral commission idk.
Does anyone spend time spinning out this kind of BS about Peter Baker or Nick Confessore or take your male reporter pick? No.

Again, I think Maggie's been thin-skinned re NYT at times, and I didn't agree with her Michelle Wolfe take. But come on people, check your biases.
This, from the writer of the Elle piece. Exactly so:
