1/ The USS Fitzgerald collided with a cargo ship off the coast of Japan in 2017. These images show how ships disappeared and reappeared on the Fitzgerald’s navigation screen.
2/ One of the navigation systems on the USS Fitzgerald was 17 years old and running on Windows 2000. It was one of dozens of problems that led to the collision. propub.li/2TuGLzi

THREAD: This week, we pubbed an investigation revealing that Navy leaders ignored years of warnings.

Then, in 2017, two crashes killed 17 sailors.

Alarms had been sounded up and down the chain of command.

Here are some of the warnings we uncovered:

2/ 2012: Navy undersecretary Bob Work told senior officials at the Pentagon the Navy’s ships were being pushed too hard. He said they repeatedly rejected one such analysis:
3/ “He would send us back and say, ‘I don't believe the data,’” Work recalled. “We'd come back with more data. He'd say, ‘I still don't believe it.’”

1/ So, we reviewed some previously secret passages of a court document filed by the state of Massachusetts in its civil complaint against @purduepharma, the makers of OxyContin.

Here’s what it said.
@purduepharma 2/ First, some background:

MA’s civil complaint contends that the Sackler fam (who founded @purduepharma) pushed for higher doses of OxyContin, guided efforts to mislead doctors and the public about the drug’s addictive capacity, and blamed misuse on patients.
@purduepharma 3/ For example, the part of the doc made public earlier this month revealed an email from 2001 in which Richard Sackler wrote:

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

Boomerang lists them alphabetically not chronologically so Chuck Jones masterpieces sit side-by-side with 1960s atrocities (& later 'revival' attempts.)

Chuck Jones intended this short to be a parody of cat & mouse "chase" cartoons. Instead, he accidentally created the definitive chase cartoon series of all time.
