@Occupy108 On Oct. 9, 2018 the Director of Public Prosecutions (AG's 'Crown attorney") rejected Lavalin's request for a deferred prosecution agreement alternative to a criminal prosecution, saying it “is not appropriate in this case.” SNC-Lavalin appealed... 2/
@Occupy108 SNC-Lavalin has been lobbying everyone to avoid criminal prosecution and cut a deal that allows them out of a 10-year ban on bidding for public contracts. (They are Canada's biggest engineering firms.) Lobbying doesn't seem to have gone anywhere because... 3/
@Occupy108 On Jan. 8, 2019 the director of public prosecutions filed its response to SNC-Lavalin's application for judicial review of the refusal of a DPA and the DPP said: “The application [by SNC-Lavalin] is bereft of any possibility of success.”
@Occupy108 So, the federal govt (through AG / DPP) has rejected a deal, and is fighting SNC-Lavalin's appeal of the decision to this day. DPP is proceeding with criminal charges. Makes it hard to see any influence being exerted on giving Lavalin a break... How's that?
@Occupy108 Now... In fairness, the fact that it is going ahead doesn't prove there wasn't a possible attempt to politically influence the DPP through the AG (which would be wrong), but if there was it had no discernible effect.
@Occupy108 And it would be hard to imagine any new AG (if you believe it is a LPC set up) would change course 180º when they have taken such a strong stand to not give SNC-Lavain a deferred prosecution agreement in the original decision and opposing the appeal of the decision.
@Occupy108 And there are many constitutional papers on the odd role of the AG and the DPP as both independent and member of cabinet. Govts like Harper's blurred the line as they made everything 'political' and an arm of policy.
