Mainframes —> personal computers

Publications —> individual creators
Mainframes still exist, and so will traditional publications that employ large groups of people.

But the dynamic totally changes when you take something that used to require a business to operate (due to cost and complexity) and make it simple enough for anyone to have one.
The first era of social platforms unlocked distribution. The next will unlock revenue.

Power is shifting towards creators.
(Yes I am subtweeting @SubstackInc 🙃)
But also Gumroad, Patreon, Stripe, etc!

We support everyone that’s doing good work in this space. It’s bigger than one company.
At Substack we like to refer creators using our platform as “Publishers”

This word traditionally refers to people like A.G. Sulzberger: the owner of a publication.

We‘re excited to see what will happen when creators become publishers.
On a related note:

Lately I have been very into the idea of workers seizing the means of production 😉
