We've dropped Slack as an experiment in how we communicate, and it's made me realize that chat beats email in two (2) main situations:

1. getting your colleague's attention *now*
2. sharing stuff that's mildly fun or interesting, yet unimportant
It sucks to wait for someone to respond to an email, but it's really nice to be able to respond to emails in your own time. If we really need attention now, we can say something, or send a text.

It forces you to be more conscientious.
Same thing goes with random chatter. It's nice to have "team joking around time" to be real actual in-person bonding. (This is why 3/4 of us moved thousands of miles to build this company together.)
(1/4 of us already lived in San Francisco)
One other really important benefit of email: You naturally think in larger chunks.

Instead of hitting "send" one line at a time, you consider the whole thought you're trying to convey before you hit send. This is important. It encourages clarity.
