V.

You’d always thought of the units you’d seen as faceless, but as the different head selections appear you realize that isn’t true at all.

Yes, they shared common characteristics, but so do humans.
Some were broader and had subtly angular shapes in their chins and sides. Others a bit taller and more sloped, a bit like the styling of a race car. A few that remind you of motorcycle helmets or hockey masks.
Aside from their shining black facebowls, the only shared feature is the antennas that come from their ears - just as if they’d been integrated into a headset like the one that has become a part of you.
You review the sea of options for a few minutes before you decide on one with a friendly sort of sleek roundness to it, and a slightly pointed chin. But it’s not quite you. Not yet.

“Can I make an alteration?”
You can feel Ada raising her eyebrow, somehow. “Please explain.”

“You can...you’re in my head?”

“Of course. I’m in control.”

Even with her keeping you still, your toes curl.

“Maybe it would be easier if I show you, then.”
You focus on the head and imagine the “ears” rising, the antennas folding into triangular arrays, the empty space filling with more translucent material until you have a pair of cat like ears waiting to be illuminated.
Normally you’d be afraid to ask, trapped in feeling silly or too “girly” but as you watch the head being mated to the rest of your chassis, it feels so right.

“There will need to be some slight adjustments to ensure you can transmit and receive properly,” Ada muses.
“But it’s...this is ok?”

She laughs again, filling you with relief. “Of course it is. We want you to belong. We want you to feel comfortable. We want you to be your true self.”
As she speaks the virtual you rotates, focusing on your lower back as a shiny black tail slides out until it lazily swishes back and forth.

“Perhaps you’d like this...accessory?”

You’re blushing, but you still say yes.
“Your creativity is already making us better. I think we will ask you to help provide more options for future designs.”

“I’d love that!”

Ada chuckles as the screen shows your completed design.

“Chassis has been fully designed and locked in. You are ready.”
The pleasure washes over you again, and it feels like you’re being edged closer and closer each time, but not quite reaching your peak.

“Preparing conversion systems. Please stand by.”
