There's a lot of bad things about the standardized tests students are subjected to, but one of the top ones in my mind is conditioning them to think that these questions have one best answer. Knowledge is a process, and it's not going to be the same for everyone.
The striving for "objectivity" is one of the causes of "bad" writing. It's not lack of student writing skill, it's that they're trying to cram their size 10 brains into size 2 shoes. They contort themselves into unnatural shapes to please the assessment. The writing shows this.
