Unbundling correlation and causation on issues like this is very difficult, and studies that can do so take years to execute properly.
The very prominent book on the dangers of phone use for young people which has garnered lots of attention and has been used prominently in other prominent books leaps immediately to causation and when there was no such evidence. This conclusion will gradually unravel, IMO.
