Here's the thing about whipping out the "innocence until proven guilty!" line in regards to rape accusations.

What you are necessarily doing in assuming the accused to be innocent right up until the court makes its decision, is assuming the accuser to be lying until that moment.
"Innocent until proven guilty" is a maxim our justice system operates by, and it's there for a reason, but it has MASSIVE repercussions if you take it outside that context & start applying it to the court of public opinion

Think about it. The backlash women have been receiving
in this Vic case and many others is a direct result of these reasoning, this presumption that they're lying from the "innocent until proven guilty" crowd.

This NEEDS to be recognized and addressed because it's a major contributing factor to the culture of fear that exists around
reporting your rape/sexual assault.

EVEN if you're deeply concerned about false rape accusations, u should be able to recognize that as it stands this presumption of ill intent that is held towards accusers means that every real victim of abuse is being subjected to what amounts
to an interrogation about *deeply* traumatic experiences as a result of the toxic application of "innocent until proven guilty" to all aspects of life

If you hold this view you will meet every potential victim of rape with the cold lack of compassion that they DO usually face rn
Are false accusations literally more common than actual rapes? Is that really your take? Because if not, then in presuming the guilt of the accuser instead of the accused, then you're attacking the group of people who are most often correct, and most often already victimized.
The idea that "innocent until proven guilty" is a neutral statement is A LIE, DON'T LET PEOPLE SPREAD IT

There is a binary at play here. If you presume either party's innocence; you're presuming the other's guilt. If you wanna reserve judgement, cool, but dont pretend that you
have avoided taking a stance as you doggedly assert a specific judgement to be true.

It's remarkable that these are the same people who get upset by "believe all women," when their own guiding philosophy is "believe all accused." It's not just remarkable; it's bs, call it out.
Presuming the innocence of the accused is not sitting back & waiting for the facts to come in; it's not neutral; it's taking a side. A common framing tactic of the right is to present their stance as the neutral take, & any divergence from that as taking a side, dont fall for it
I choose to err on the side of believing the victim, b/c believing false accusations are literally more common than rapes is absurd. There's room 4 looking at evidence for & against guilt in a given case, but assuming women r lying as ur baseline? That's fucking garbage /thread
