Jackson in this hearing and the last one, was clearly irked by Downing's effort to cite his cross-examination of Gates' and the comments one juror made. Jackson scolded Downing, noting he incorrectly described a news report and that it's not evidence anyway.
Downing comes off really badly in these breach hearings. At the Feb. 4 hearing he said prosecutors' argument that Manafort lied about conversations about sanctions on Russia was "nonsense because no matter who gets elected...the sanctions were going to continue."
Downing couldn't be more wrong about about this. During his campaign, in response to a question from Maria Butina, of all people, Trump suggested he'd be willing to lift sanctions on Russia. motherjones.com/politics/2018/… … After he won, he tried to do so. nbcnews.com/politics/white…
Here Jackson rips Manafort's lawyers for making claims for "public consumption" without providing any real evidence for them.
Jackson also accused Manafort's lawyers of making disingenuous arguments the conditions Manafort faces in prison, after explaining he was there due to witness tampering he later admitted he did.

The Intelligence Committee agreed to limit the scope July 25, 2017 interview of Manafort to questions about the Trump Tower meeting. They never interviewed him about Kilimnik, the peace plan, Rusisan sanctions etc. And they never subpoenaed him to try to compel more corporation.

Jackson's ruling is a big deal. She lent the court's weight to a major Mueller contention: Manafort lied to hide his contacts while running Trump's campaign with a suspected Russian agent. motherjones.com/politics/2019/…
Manafort gave polling data to a suspected Russian proxy and at the same meeting discussed a plan that to lift US sanctions on Russia. He concealed that activity, which sounds like what most people would define as collusion, from prosecutors in hopes Trump will pardon him.

Warner didn't discuss committee findings, but said the public record is damning: "The president’s campaign manager was sharing internal campaign documents with the Russians in advance of the release of information (by Russia) that interfered massively" with the election.

Manafort Trial Day 9: There are four govt witnesses left -- three appear to have ties to Federal Savings Bank, and two were given immunity. The govt has alleged the head of a bank (believed to be FSB) engaged in a quid pro quo, loan money for a Trump campaign/possible admin job
Assuming there aren't delays, the govt has said it expects to finish presenting its case in chief today. Then, the judge will ask Manafort's lawyers if they plan to put on any witnesses, or submit any motions. He doesn't have to. And then it's the weekend.
Things have consistently been tense between the judge and prosecutors throughout the trial, and that came to a bit of a head yesterday. For more on that: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…

#ManafortTrial Thread - Cross Examination of Gates lasts less than hour, info from @tjryan93: Downing primarily asked Gates about an interview he gave to the FBI in 2014 about work Davis Manafort Partners International performed for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Gates said that during the interview he disclosed to the FBI the existence of offshore accounts Manafort controlled. Prosecutors have alleged these accounts were used to shield money from U.S. taxes.
Gates testified he disclosed the accounts at Manafort’s direction.
“He indicated that we should be open and provide the information about the questions that had been asked of us,” Gates said.

THREAD: What did we learn from Day Six of the Manafort trial?
1/ Today was the most important day of the Manafort trial—the bulk of the testimony of cooperator Rick Gates, Manafort’s former deputy. Prosecutors spent hours with Gates, walking through documents and emails and asking him to explain how the criminal scheme worked.
2/ More press coverage has been spent on the cross examination of Gates, because ultimately the defense’s success or failure on cross will determine whether they have a puncher’s chance to win. But as a practical matter, Gates’ questioning by prosecutors will matter more.

1/ Today was a half day at the Manafort trial—testimony began at 1pm—but it was an extremely important day because cooperator Rick Gates, Manafort’s former deputy, took the stand. There’s no question that he is the most important witness in this trial.
2/ Before we get to Gates, Manafort’s former accountant Cindy Laporta finished her testimony today. Her testimony is damaging to Manafort because she testified that she lied at his direction. Even if the jury disbelieves Gates, they could still convict Manafort due to Laporta.

THREAD: What did we learn from Day Three of the Manafort trial?
1/ Today prosecutors moved to the meat of their case. A key charge against Manafort is bank fraud, which is when someone lies to a bank in order to get money. Today prosecutors showed financial statements sent by Manafort to a bank that vastly overstated his company’s income.
2/ The jury also heard from an accountant who prepared Manafort’s taxes, who testified that he asked whether Manafort had foreign bank accounts, and Manafort said no.(Hiding foreign bank accounts from the government is a crime.)
