After 1990s collapses of Soviet Union and rapprochement of China and Vietnam, Both gov agreed to downplay the war domestically. When I grew in China in 1980s, border war was still on, plenty of movies about Sino-Vietnamese War. Most famous is 👇🏼
Biggest change in China Vietnam relations came after Gorbachev visited China in May 1989 (during Tiananmen Square Student protest). In Oct 1989, Vietnamese Vice FM visited China to discuss Cambodia.
Breakthru in China Vietnam relations happened on Sept, 1990 when China and Vietnam top leadership secretly met in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, China. Vietnamese leader Nguyễn Văn Linh said "We decided to correct our past mistakes, restore our traditional friendship!"
Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, upon meeting Vietnamese leadership quoted poem from Lu Xun 度尽劫波兄弟在,相逢一笑泯恩仇 After all the diasters brotherhood remained. A smile at meeting, enmity is banished. Both gov then downplayed Sino-Vietnamese War domestically
After China Vietnam Rapprochement in 1990s, no more Chinese TV/Movie made about Sino-Vietnamese War until Feng Xiaogang's 2017 movie "Youth" which contained 13 min of Sino-Vietnamese War battle scene. see entire 13 min here:
The legacy of Sino-Vietnamese War remains in forms of tens of thousands of mines on the border load from 1979-1989. Demining operation still goes on today. Malipo was a major battlefield 👇🏼
