based on the article, the part about the teacher asking an 11-year old "why if it was so bad here he did not go to another place to live" seems to be *self-reported* by the teacher.
there's many angles to this story — most obviously the policing of claims about racial justice, and the jingoism that the teacher is using the Pledge of Allegiance to promote — & also how we criminalize the behavior of kids & the lifelong consequences such treatment will have
^ North Dakota is right now considering a bill that would raise the age at which children can be sent to the juvenile justice system from 7 to 10. Though during one of the legislative debates, one lawmaker wondered if 10 is not still too young.
One of story's most telling aspects is how it's deemed absolutely normal, routine, & reasonable (here by Lakeland's Police Department) for an 11-year old child to be arrested, held in detention center, & charged. When that's big part of story (see above).
