Not only has this aged like a fine wine, it's also very telling about what the centrists are actually up to.
Liberals do not have a systemic critique - things are fine, we just need to make a few changes so things are less racist / poor people have it a bit easier
This means that left-wing critiques, AKA, major changes need to be made to protect our freedoms and undo the looting of prior regimes, are far more of a threat to their worldview than the tories winning and making things slightly worse.
Slightly worse in relation to the 'slightly less worse' afforded by their more milquetoast liberalism, that is
As Umunna specifically points out, splitting the party would be handing the tories a win - and he obviously knows this, he wrote it himself.
This is the point. He'd rather the right win and pursue their status-quo-but-worse, than see the actual left change it. Hence this.
This is the same in the US with Schultz ~specifically~ saying he won't run if someone like Bernie isn't the nominee.
It's a tactic to damage the left and prevent someone who might oppose corporate interests, even if it means ordinary working people lose out.
anyway the answer is to replace bad representatives with good ones by broadening the conversation, and the party is better without these folks in it, let em go. vaya con dios, amigos
