Some intrepid journalist working the conservative movement beat (@cjane87!) should do a "Opponents of the Ground Zero Mosque: Where are they now?" piece. The discourse on religious liberty has shifted so dramatically in the last decade that the time is ripe for some reflection.
This comment from @DavidAFrench, as well as the article it is speaking to, seem entirely correct to me. But I remember quite well the urgent rooting for evidence that the GZM was connected to terrorism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Americanism.

And even David French got in the act.

And while he was hardly the worst offender at the time, National Review's authors did lead the charge. Indeed, the editors at the time endorsed a consumer boycott of the mosque and its supporters.

This isn't whataboutism. This is my sincere question for .@DavidAFrench and anyone else on the Right who opposed the mosque or joined in the eager hunt for damaging evidence. The world looks very different today, doesn't it? So do you see this issue the same way?

This one's a doozy.

Michele Di Franco is a student at the University of Ottawa and an executive of uOttawa Students for Free Speech. Earlier this month, he brought a $150,000 defamation suit against Michael Bueckert, a PhD student at Carleton University.
The reason? Bueckert wrote a post on Medium about how campus free speech groups, including Di Franco's, helped to advise the Ford government as it crafted its campus free speech legislation. Many of these groups, Bueckert notes, have alt-right sympathies.

Di Franco was not impressed. According to his attorneys, he was being falsely portrayed by Bueckert as "a racist, a misogynist, and a homophobe", and was especially incensed that Bueckert called him "alt-right" for (among other things) appearing on Gavin McInnes's show.

Riddle me this, Twitter: I’m one of those SJWs who tends to feel we don’t think seriously enough about how speech can inflict harm. So what does it mean that my most vociferous critics are also deeply alarmed by Leftwing Outage Mobs and their impact on their target’s well-being?
Bracket entirely for a moment the ways that online speech can have offline consequences, eg reputational, death threats, etc. I’m talking just about the angry trolls and their insults, which it is alleged can trigger real emotional harm (see SSC).
Is this genuine horseshoe theory? Or am I misunderstanding things?

1. I see I need to explain the whole talking in code thing. And you can ask any other investigative journalist working on the intel beat if this is true, which it is. If you cover this beat, you will at one point or another have to talk to scumbags who do side work
2. For IC because they have the criminal credentials that make them ideal for infiltrating various criminal ops. They make a statement as fact (even if its not) as a way of communicating a desired action.
3. Or they will drop a single word and not elaborate and you understand - without being told step by step what they want you to do. Now as a journalist, you can employ a take it or leave it approach to any hints or "suggestions." But if you are working for the POTUS...

None of this gaslighting about 'Right-wing extremism' is new. The Obama administration repeatedly used DHS and DOJ to indicate that the 'real threats' came from veterans, Republicans, Teapartiers and "sovereign citizen" groups.
2014, @MSNBC and @CNN used specious #SPLC data and Obama administration propaganda to conclude that "since 911....More Americans have died at the hands of Right-wing political violence than Muslim extremists." Patently absurd propaganda, repeated ad nauseam.
Feb 2015, @CNN joined discredited hate-group, #SPLC and Obama admin again; "DHS report warns of domestic right-wing terror threat." The "report" wasn't released, and CNN claimed to have been leaked a copy, publishing only salacious smears. creators.com/read/michelle-…

1. Thread on conservative media's white nationalism problem.
2. Predictably, conservatives are defending the Daily Caller, the White House, & other institutions that have hired avowed white nationalists by saying "this is just guilt by association." They will also point out that organizations on the left have links to "known Socialists!!!"
3. Guilt by association is indeed a bad form of argumentation, if it's only 1 or 2 cases. But when dozens of people & institutions are found to have ties with actual white nationalists (whose ideas, let's remember, are implicitly genocidal) then it starts to look like a pattern.

Let us be frank: This is unadulterated nonsense.
2/ There's no such "movement," undetected or otherwise. And I say that as someone who proudly worked for many years in DOJ to protect religious liberty. The AG's speech is dishonest (or at best sincere but mistaken) in several respects.
