I just got this text message from nick Mullen advising me to take down this tweet about Brody Steven's that apparently people are like screen shotting and sending to him because it sounds like I'm making his death about me. I'm gonna explain this and leave it up to you
When a comedian dies, every single person in my feed who is also a comedian says some shit about it. It's often very cynical. Someone will be like "I met Earthquake (is Earthquake dead?) once at Taco Bell" and they're clearly just trying to get attention from the death
And yeah that sucks and is fun to dunk on and shit. "RIP LARRY DAVID, PLEASE COME TO THE OPEN MIC I HOST IN A BATHROOM IN QUEENS AND PAY 5 DOLLARS"
Then there are some people who are really close to the person, who are obviously devastated. The rest of us are somewhere in the middle.
But here's the thing, a bunch of my pals are dead. I've been to a lot of funerals, and what seems pretty obvious to me is, the funerals are not about the person in the casket/urn (is Earthquake still alive or am I crazy?)
Talking about someone who is dead is absolutely making it about yourself. This is what's known as "grieving" or just plain old "processing." That is the point of all of this.
Death, especially suicide, freaks me out, because I have depression or bipolar or some crazy kind of shit going on and often get really persistent suicidal thoughts. This winter it got really bad and I had someone laugh in my face about it and ask me how I was gonna do it
Now I wasn't friends with Brody and I was actually kind of enemies, which adds a whole other level to this, and makes it kind of fascinating and interesting to me, and requires processing. What do you do when someone who hates you dies?
Well I feel a number of different things. One is that arguing online is petty and maybe we shouldn't have done that. But then also some of the stuff he said to me was pretty racist and dying doesn't change that. Then there's a third thing (Andy kindler's still alive right?)
He's a comedian and there's this weird shit when a comedian dies where people go "don't you dare joke about them" and its like... Do you not see the irony here? Ralphie May explicitly asked us to roast him when he was dead.
So yeah talking about this is completely making it about myself. I'm not trying to sell you a product, I'm just tired and thinking through this dumb app that we all use for this all day. Do whatever you will with that.
I enjoy the irony poisoned extremely online world a lot but I'm not going to pretend like I'm not human just to hang out in it. I'm a sincere person and I'm not gonna cowtow to a bunch of podcast people. I'm trying to be honest and consistent in the shit I write.
I don't know how to end this thread. RIP STAVROS or something
